About The Project

This research project is funded by a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) (DE210100368) of the Australian Research Council as well as the University of Sydney. The research examines ‘algorithmic management’ as a twenty-first century technological disruption recasting the organisation, experience,and performance of work.

The aim of the study is to conduct the first large-scale, systematic Australia-based investigation of ‘algorithmic management’ and workers’ experiences with these systems. The project uses a multi-stakeholder approach, investigating the use of the technology through different perspectives.

The project’s objectives are to:

  • advance understandings on the impact of ‘algorithmic management’ for management, work and employment;
  • investigate the implications and experience of increasingly de-humanised management for workers;
  • interrogate the ethical challenges associated with ‘algorithmic management’; and
  • explore how Australian businesses and consumers engage with and understand algorithmic management.

The gig economy is at the forefront of ‘algorithmic management’, a major technological disruption of management, work, and employment. Used to replace humans as organizational managers, these systems are projected to spread wide across the Australian economy yet remain poorly understood. This study will systematically interrogate the nature and operations of algorithmic management across platforms operational in the Australian gig economy. It will explore the design and oversight of workers’ experiences with, and the role end-users play in sustaining these systems. The study will generate state-of-the-art academic knowledge and provide guidance to policy makers on how to respond to, and where necessary regulate, algorithmic management.
